Raquel had cystic fibrosis but unexpectedly passed away during the last quarter of 2017 at only 19 as a result of suboptimal care.

To bring awareness about CF, campaigning for improvements in hospitals and supporting people with CF in education and in setting up & developing a business.

There is no cure for CF and even a promise of a cure would not have helped Raquel. Working towards a cure makes sense and gives hope but of course the greater the hope the more that pharma can keep the spotlight on them aided by many doctors that aimlessly overmedicate, leaving the patient to suffer nasty side effects. Often, additional medications are prescribed for the side effects creating a vicious circle.  

Feeling unaccountable for their actions such doctors often hold up the ‘I’m only human’ get-out-of-jail card to the few that endeavour to challenge. 

Raquel would be here today if certain basic stuff had been working satisfactorily including transition from the paediatric to adult service, communication and human resource. When working well, things such as these can help patients stay healthier and avoid premature deaths.

Patients need to feel assured that they can be accompanied and supported by a family member should they wish as opposed to the distress caused by the support network being ostracised.  

To help achieve the above improvements we will discuss the issues in question with the CF Trust with the view that knowledge gained can be accessed by both UK and non-UK CF Centres.

Achieving and maintaining employment is a challenge for people with CF as it can be very difficult to balance work with the needs of the condition, on both a physically and emotional level. However, setting up a business, as self-employed or as a registered company, can be a solution as s/he can be in control of the work-life-CF balance. 

Although a business may not mean less work, it does allow flexibility in terms of when and where that work is undertaken. It is not about doing more or less work but about having time when needed. Indeed, if the business were to develop to a level where a workforce can be taken on then this could well remove workload, potentially increasing quality of life. However, the benefits are wide and far-reaching as the positive impact of a business affects many different levels.  

In order to support with this we aim to fundraise via our own international charitable association to offer financial and non-financial support to people with CF in launching their own business on a national or international dimension.

No hay cura para la fibrosis quística y ni siquiera la promesa de una habría ayudado a Raquel. Es lógico y esperanzador trabajar para conseguir una cura, pero claro, cuanto mayor es la esperanza, mayor es la importancia que se le da a las farmacéuticas, acompañadas de médicos que sobremedican sin un objetivo claro, y que dejan que el paciente sufra efectos secundarios muy desagradables. Muchas veces se recetan medicamentos adicionales para los efectos secundarios y se crea un círculo vicioso.  

Estos médicos no se sienten responsables de sus actos y muchos sacan el famoso comodín de “es que todos somos humanos” que les exime de todo, frente a los pocos que realmente se esfuerzan.

Raquel estaría aquí hoy si ciertas operaciones básicas hubieran funcionado correctamente, incluyendo la transición de pediatría al servicio de adultos, la comunicación y los recursos humanos. La correcta ejecución de estas operaciones puede ayudar a los pacientes a mantenerse más sanos y evitar muertes prematuras.

Los pacientes deben saber que, si así lo desean, un miembro de la familia los puede acompañar y apoyar durante todo el proceso, y así se evita la angustia que se les causa si se les quita esa red de apoyo.

Lograr y mantener un empleo supone un reto para las personas con FQ, ya que puede ser muy difícil equilibrar el trabajo con los cuidados que requiere la enfermedad, tanto a nivel físico como emocional. Sin embargo, la creación de una empresa ya sea como autónomo o como empresa registrada puede ser una solución, ya que permite al enfermo mantener un equilibrio entre el tiempo que dedica al trabajo y el tiempo que necesita para los tratamientos. 

Aunque una empresa no signifique menos trabajo, sí permite flexibilidad en términos de cuándo y dónde se lleva a cabo ese trabajo. No se trata de hacer más o menos trabajo, sino de tener tiempo cuando sea necesario. De hecho, si la empresa se desarrollara a un nivel en el que se pudiera contratar mano de obra, esto podría eliminar la carga de trabajo y aumentar potencialmente la calidad de vida. Además, los beneficios son amplios y de gran alcance, ya que el impacto positivo de un negocio afecta a muchos niveles.

Con el fin de fomentar esto, nuestro objetivo es recaudar fondos a través de nuestra propia asociación benéfica internacional para ofrecer apoyo financiero y no financiero a las personas con FQ en el lanzamiento de su propio negocio a escala nacional o internacional.
